If you are wondering if green tomatoes are safe to eat, YES! They are perfectly safe. Some of them are more bitter than others, due to not being fully ripe, but they are still delicious. A true gardener’s delight to enjoy!
This is an amazing way to enjoy your garden produce a bit earlier. If you are like me, then it’s never too early to have fresh tomatoes! A bit of tang and bite, along with a crispy coating makes these the perfect side dish to your grilled meals, too.
Traditionally, fried green tomatoes uses lard or bacon grease to fry in. We will take a twist on this Southern fried classic and make a more simple fried green tomatoes recipe.
Some other oils you can choose to make fried tomatoes in:
- Avocado oil
- Coconut oil
- Tallow (beef fat)
- Schmaltz (chicken fat)
Olive oil is not recommended for frying, as it’s not heat stable, and can break down. If you use a cast iron skillet to make these in, you will obtain the crispy coating, and the Southern flair of the traditional recipe.
A traditional southern fried green tomatoes recipe also uses cornmeal mixture for a crispy coating. However, if you need to avoid corn for any reason, there are alternatives. Most commercial grown corn is GMO, and it’s getting more difficult to find true organic, non GMO products. While they ARE still out there, there are other alternatives. A fried green tomatoes recipe without cornmeal IS possible, friends.
Try breading them with:
- Panko bread crumbs
- Almond flour
- Crushed pecans
- Deep fried chicken skins (get the recipe here)
Sprinkling the thick tomato slices with a bit of sugar helps to eliminate some of the acid and bitterness. It’s completely optional, of course, but does make for a less bitter side dish. Salt and pepper after frying, as well as in the batter, seasons them perfectly.
If you are wanting a way to get kids involved in food preparation, this is a great recipe to get them started with. Kids can learn how to plant tomatoes and watch them grow, then harvest a few early on to keep their interest peaked.
Ingredients you need:
- Green tomatoes
- ½ teaspoon sugar (optional)
- ½ cup panko bread crumbs
- ½ cup almond flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 3 eggs, beaten
- ¼ cup water or heavy cream
- ½ cup frying oil of choice
- Wash and core tomatoes.
- Slice into ½ inch thick slices
- Lay in a single layer on a baking sheet or plate.
- Sprinkle with sugar, if desired.
- In a medium mixing bowl, blend together bread crumbs, flour, and seasonings.
- In a separate bowl, mix the beaten eggs and liquid of choice.
- Heat the oil in a cast iron skillet over medium high heat. Oil is ready when a breaded tomato slice bubbles up when placed in the oil. If it doesn’t bubble, remove the slice and wait a bit longer.
- To keep things neat, make an assembly line with the ingredients, moving toward the skillet.
- Dip the tomato slices in the egg wash, then coat in bread crumbs.
- Carefully place in the hot oil in a single layer.
- Repeat until pan is full
- Fry for 3 minutes per side, until golden brown.
- Drain on paper towels, or cotton cloth.
- Sprinkle with additional salt and pepper.
- Serve hot.
