Laying Pipe…For the Garden

Shared from: http://www.earthwormsandmarmalade.com/2014/02/laying-pipefor-garden.html

Thomas Fuller said, “We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.”  Unfortunately, when I planned my garden beds behind the garage, I didn’t take into account the distance to the nearest ‘well.’  Getting water from the other side of the house isn’t impossible, it’s just really annoying.  I have to hook together 3 hoses to make it all the way to the garden.

Here you see my fall garden dwindling.  Look at all those weeds.  I knew I had a green thumb!

I stood as close as I could to the back side of the garage to show how far the nearest water source is to the garden.  I know, it isn’t that far, but when the heat reaches 105 in August and September, I’m not going to want to hang out dragging 3 hoses here and there around the yard.

Our super simple plan was to dig a trench across the yard and lay 1/2″ PVC pipe to the garden area.  We waited until we’d had a nice rain and the ground was soft.

Eye Candy, I mean, Helpful Husband

Dig Dig Dig

We only encountered 2 problems along the way:  Large roots from an oak tree that my dad took down this summer and…a telephone wire…she said sheepishly.  Take my advice, call to have your lines marked.  Some are only buried 6 or so inches under ground.  Ooops!  The repair man was very sweet and there within 24 hours.

and the telephone line…

At this point I felt excited but still had a lot of digging to do.

Finally laying that pipe!

Almost there!!

Burying the pipe was very satisfying.  The grass will soon grow over the trench, and it will look as good as new!

Finally the moment of truth!  Water!!

I’m thrilled with the results of the pipe laying project.

Note the lines are now marked.  AFTER we finished the project.  Makes perfect sense, of course.   I’ve got 5 fruit trees to plant and didn’t want to make the same mistake twice!
